What Is Septoplasty & Turbinate Reduction?

Septoplasty & turbinate reduction is actually a combination of two procedures. Septoplasty allows Dr. Miller, a board-certified surgeon in NYC, to realign the wall between the two nostrils – the septum – to achieve balance and symmetry between the two nasal cavities. When the septum is misshapen, the condition is called a “deviated septum.” For more information about deviated septum and how to treat it, please watch Dr. Miller's video here.

Turbinate reduction permits the surgeon to reduce or remove the nasal turbinates – the bony, mucosa-lined outgrowths on the sides of each nostril. Turbinates are the filtering device that the nose uses to clean inhaled air before it reaches the lungs. When turbinates become enlarged or inflamed, they can cause nasal blockage, mucus production, and nasal drip.

Many patients suffer from both a deviated septum and chronically enlarged turbinates. These conditions, when combined, can make breathing very difficult. Oftentimes, septoplasty & turbinate reduction surgery is the only answer.

How is a Septoplasty Turbinate Reduction Performed by Dr. Miller?

Dr. Miller performs septoplasty turbinate reduction surgeries in his NYC office’s accredited surgical suite. The outpatient procedure, which usually lasts less than one hour, begins with Dr. Miller separating the septum from the mucosa lining surrounding it. The septum is repositioned and the mucosa lining is replaced. He then addresses the reduction or removal of the enlarged turbinates.

What Should I Expect After A Septoplasty Turbinate Reduction?

While nose surgery recovery varies from patient to patient, you should expect the following:

Return Home Immediately After Your Procedure

Turbinate reduction is an outpatient procedure. If general anesthesia is used, you should not drive or travel alone and should be accompanied by someone for at least the first day.

Take Some Time Off From Work Or School

Most people take between two days to one week off of work or school to ensure a comfortable and restful recovery. How long will depend on the type of work you do. You want to avoid dusty environments or heavy physical activity during at least the first week or so.

Keep The Nasal Cavities Moist

Dr. Miller will provide the appropriate post-operative treatments, along with specific directions for their use.

What Are The Benefits Of Septoplasty & Turbinate Reduction?

There are numerous benefits associated with a septoplasty turbinate reduction procedure, including:

Improved Breathing

By clearing the nasal passages, you can enjoy uninterrupted breathing patterns.

Better Sleep

Impeded nasal airways are the leading cause of a poor night’s sleep. Whether it is excessive snoring, sleep apnea or other conditions, repairing the inner nasal structure to improve airflow can be the most effective way to enjoy more restful nights.

Fewer Sinus Infections

Blocked nasal passageways result in an increase in sinus infections. By creating an open and unimpeded airway, drainage improves and these infections are reduced or eliminated.

Am I A Good Candidate?

If you experience recurrent sinusitis, excessive and continuous nasal drip or other respiratory complaints, you may be a good candidate for a septoplasty & turbinate reduction procedure. An otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor), such as Dr. Miller, can examine you to identify whether a deviated septum and enlarged turbinates are the cause of your problems.
